Some people define themselves through their attitude or world view.

Some people define themselves through their work or the way they live their lives.

Some people define themselves with the way they choose to present themselves to the world...whether it’s through their clothes, their makeup or their hairstyle.

For example, Lady Gaga, the main actress in the new movie, “A Star Is Born,”  is typically known for her unique hairstyles, makeup looks and wardrobe choices. Those are the ways she chooses to express her identity on a day to day basis.

Those qualities define her so much, that in this interview with late night talk show host Stephen Colbert, Gaga explained that she is not the same person as the character she plays in the movie, Ally, due to the difference in hair and makeup choice.

Without her unique hair and bold makeup, Gaga doesn’t feel like herself...and she’s not the only one.

Millions of people change the length, shape, color and style of their hair every day. Whether it’s just for fun, or for a long-time change, hair allows an individual define who they are to themselves and the rest of the world.

 hair identity

Rose Weitz, a women and gender studies professor at Arizona State University told TODAY that hair is, “...intensely personal, but it’s also totally public...[hair is] malleable; we can change it so easily in ways that we can’t change any other part of our body. It becomes a reflection of who that person is, and a sign of our identity.”

Since hair is one of the easiest physically identifying traits to alter on the human body, it can be an easy way to tell your story to others.

Maybe you got a pixie cut and dyed your hair pink to support your mom, who is fighting breast cancer.

Maybe you just got a trim and darkened the color a bit for fall.

Maybe you’re just fine letting those grey hairs show because you think aging is a natural, beautiful process.

Whatever choice you make with your hair is a choice about how you identify and portray yourself to the rest of the world. That’s why it’s important to take care of yourself, your hair and all other things that help you define yourself.

Whether you wear your hair au naturale or you like to play with different colors and styles, make sure you’re keeping it healthy and nourished. Try using as little heat as possible, avoid over-washing it and use a little bit of hair oil every now and then to keep your hair as strong and healthy as possible.

When taking care of your hair with products like hair oil, though, make sure you’re using the healthiest options possible.

When it comes to nurturing a part of your identity, try using all-natural products, like our hair oil or beard oil (hair is hair, we don’t judge!). We promise it’s only packed with the best natural ingredients that encourage you to #ExperienceTheChemistry of your true and best self!
